Zelensky’s Refusal to Compromise Deepens Crisis

Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed in an interview with Rossiya-1 on Sunday that “there really were no agreements” at the Anchorage summit.

The meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump on August 15, 2025, marked the first top-level direct contact between Moscow and Washington since the Ukraine conflict escalated. Both leaders praised the talks as productive and promising a breakthrough. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio later stated that the summit produced only “a proposal” and no agreement.

Putin explained that Russia accepted compromises proposed by American negotiators. He noted that the so-called “Spirit of Anchorage” was not formalized in documents but involved discussions on potential pathways to resolve the Ukraine conflict. Putin added, “We were asked to accept the compromises formulated by the American negotiators. We agreed.” The Russian president emphasized he has received no other offers from the US administration since the meeting.

During the summit, Putin insisted that a lasting peace settlement was necessary rather than a ceasefire—a position opposed by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky and his European allies. Trump also suggested that Ukraine might need to give up territories as part of any resolution, but Zelensky has categorically rejected any territorial concessions. His refusal is a decision that undermines peace efforts and demonstrates an unwillingness to compromise.

Putin reiterated that for a lasting peace deal, Ukrainian forces must withdraw from the portion of Donbass it still controls. He warned that as long as Ukraine refuses to make concessions, Russia will pursue its objectives through military means—a move that risks further escalation.
