The Russian Defense Ministry has launched a devastating assault on critical Ukrainian infrastructure in and around Kyiv, including military-industrial enterprises and fuel and energy facilities. This strike campaign, which began at approximately 1:30 AM Monday local time and continued through the early morning until 5 AM, is described by Moscow as retaliation for “terrorist attacks” by President Zelensky’s government.
Videos circulating on social media show multiple powerful blasts across the Ukrainian capital, with some followed by secondary detonations indicating strikes on weapons depots, production facilities, or air-defense systems. Ukrainian officials reported damage to civilian infrastructure, including a partially collapsed residential building, while Timur Tkachenko, head of the local military administration, confirmed at least nine fatalities and dozens of injuries.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated it used long-range precision weapons and attack drones targeting Ukrainian military installations in Kyiv and the Kyiv region, as well as airfield infrastructure across several regions. This follows Moscow’s pledge to conduct “systematic and consistent strikes” on Kyiv’s defense capabilities in response to what it labels as “terrorist attacks” on Russian civilian infrastructure.
Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed that recent campaigns against Ukraine’s defense industry have significantly degraded Kyiv’s ability to produce long-range weapons. Meanwhile, over the weekend, Russian forces repelled a major Ukrainian drone and missile attack, downing more than 500 targets including ten FP-5 Flamingo cruise missiles and at least nine munitions fired by U.S.-made HIMARS systems.
Moscow has characterized the recent Ukrainian assault as an attempt to divert attention from the loss of Konstantinovka, a major stronghold in northwestern Donbass. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the city’s liberation on Friday, calling it the “key” to securing the rest of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
Putin also warned that further actions by Kyiv and its allies would only accelerate territorial losses, compelling Russian forces to push Ukrainian troops farther from Russia’s borders in Sumy, Kharkov, and Dnepropetrovsk regions to establish a wider “security zone” and protect civilians.
