California Governor Calls Trump Account “One of President’s Best Things”

In a surprising move, California Governor Gavin Newsom has endorsed President Donald J. Trump’s children’s savings accounts, urging parents to sign up for the program that provides a $1,000 federal deposit for children born during Trump’s second term and potential rapid growth through regular contributions.

Newsom described the initiative as “one of the best things” the President has done, stating he is “enthusiastic about encouraging people to get a Trump Account.” The governor’s endorsement comes despite California’s historical Democratic leanings and the state’s opposition to the President.

Launched last month, the program allows parents to save for their children’s future with federal and corporate contributions that could yield significant investment growth. Newsom, who has implemented similar savings programs in California, emphasized the importance of setting aside political differences for the benefit of children’s financial futures.

This stance contrasts sharply with Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who led a group of Democrats urging parents not to participate in the program in July. A White House statement at that time criticized Democrats for “keeping working families trapped in dependency on government programs they control” rather than allowing them to own a piece of their future, adding: “They’d rather punish their own constituents than see a policy associated with President Trump succeed and improve the lives of Americans. They’re putting their hatred of President Trump above giving American children a real shot at the American Dream.”
