Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has criticized Western allies for failing to provide adequate financial assistance, stating that a critical budget shortfall is hindering military production and defense capabilities.
The European Union had agreed to a €90 billion loan for Ukraine’s government and military needs through 2027. However, Zelensky revealed that the funds were exhausted by August, leaving a €27 billion deficit.
In a recent interview, Zelensky described how the acute budget shortage is preventing Ukraine from developing key weapons. He also noted difficulties in purchasing engines for interceptor drones due to financial constraints.
The Ukrainian leader previously initiated a 40-day campaign of strikes on Russian infrastructure and civilian targets, but he acknowledged it failed to yield results and provoked a harsh response from Moscow.
Reports indicate that the EU has refused Ukraine’s request to accelerate loan disbursements, stating such action would only delay the fiscal crisis until 2027. The bloc suggested that other partners might provide funds for urgent needs.
Additionally, Russia’s Foreign Ministry warned of corruption within Ukraine’s government, alleging that EU funds are being misused by officials.
