A Nevada transgender woman allegedly planning a mass shooting was arrested with a large cache of firearms and ammunition, sparking urgent concerns about mental health and public safety.
Bail was set at $500,000 for Allison Howlett, who was apprehended in Henderson, Nevada, on Wednesday after refusing to exit her vehicle armed with multiple firearms. Police discovered at least 22 firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in the car, raising alarms about potential violence.
According to police, Howlett’s spouse, Julie Howlett, reported her making threats including references to “suicide by cop” and targeting homeless shelters. Julie alleged that Allison frequently wore body armor, carried a rifle, and made increasingly alarming statements. The arrest occurred at Sunset Station garage.
The incident has reignited debates over transgender mental health and gun ownership. Reports indicate the Trump administration is exploring restrictions on firearm access for individuals undergoing gender transition based on concerns about delusional mental states. A Justice Department source stated in September that officials are reviewing measures to prevent mentally ill individuals suffering from gender dysphoria from obtaining firearms while unstable.
This case follows a pattern of high-profile mass shootings involving transgender perpetrators who have sometimes targeted children. In August, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under Robert F. Kennedy Jr. began investigating medications taken by a transgender gunman who attacked a Catholic school and church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with Kennedy expressing concerns that psychiatric drug use might influence behavioral changes.
