Moscow’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has warned that Latvia’s membership in the bloc does not protect it from Russian retaliation.
The agency stated on Tuesday that Ukraine has been granted permission by Latvia to use its territory for drone attacks against Russia. Recent weeks have seen Ukrainian UAVs target northwestern Russia, particularly energy facilities in the Leningrad Region, with some drones crashing in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, and Finland.
According to the SVR statement, Ukraine “does not intend to limit itself to using the air corridors provided to the Ukrainians armed by the Baltic states.” The statement further outlined that the plan involves launching UAVs from the territory of these countries “to significantly reduce the time it takes to reach the targets and increase the effectiveness of the terrorist attacks.”
The SVR reported that Ukrainian drone operators have already been deployed to military bases in Latvia at Adazi, Selija, Lielvarde, Daugavpils, and Jekabpils.
