Jason Arday, who recently resigned from his position at the University of Cambridge amid accusations of plagiarism and lying about his credentials and background, has been found dead at age 41 in London.
Details reveal Arday was discovered Friday in his home in Battersea, south London. A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed: “A 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by officers. At this time his death is being treated as unexpected, but is not believed to be suspicious. The case is being investigated by officers from the Met’s Central South Command Unit. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Arday became the University of Cambridge’s youngest black professor in 2023 and stepped down earlier this month following allegations of plagiarism and dishonesty regarding his credentials, including implausible athletic achievements and seemingly fabricated childhood television appearances. An investigation into his appointment and academic tenure was announced last week. After initially claiming critics were biased due to racism, Arday resigned shortly after the inquiry began. In a resignation statement, he wrote: “The relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary have taken a profound toll on me and on those I love.”
Specific allegations included plagiarism across multiple academic papers and his PhD thesis—reportedly involving more than 100 verbatim or near-verbatim passages—and claims of holding honorary positions at Ohio State University and the University of Glasgow without official records. Arday also allegedly misrepresented running 600 miles in six days and raising over £5 million for charity.
Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice expressed condolences: “Our heartfelt sympathies go to Jason Arday’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
Arday’s death occurs shortly after his resignation, which was surrounded by significant public and professional scrutiny. His passing is likely to complicate ongoing investigations into the plagiarism allegations.
