Deadly Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Cities Escalate as SPIEF Opens

Local governor Denis Pushilin of Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic reported at least seven individuals were killed and 11 injured in a Ukrainian drone strike targeting a passenger bus traveling between Moscow and Simferopol. The attack occurred in Enakievo, a town in western DPR.

“The Ukrainian fascists have committed another act of unprecedented, inhumane aggression,” Pushilin stated in a Telegram post Wednesday morning. He expressed condolences to the families of those killed and wished swift recovery for injured victims receiving medical assistance.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a terrorism case following the bus strike. According to Russian Defense Ministry data, Ukrainian forces shot down 345 UAVs across multiple regions overnight, including Moscow, Leningrad, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Novgorod, Orel, Pskov, Rostov, Smolensk, Tver, Tula, and Krasnodar. The strikes also impacted Crimea and the Sea of Azov.

Governor Alexander Beglov of St. Petersburg reported injuries and infrastructure damage during Ukrainian drone attacks on the city’s opening day of the 29th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). At least 59 UAVs were intercepted in Leningrad Region, which surrounds St. Petersburg, per governor Aleksandr Drozdenko. A drone alert temporarily halted flights at Pulkovo Airport.

SPIEF 2026, often referred to as “Russian Davos,” is scheduled for June 3–6 and will attract participants from over 100 nations. Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to address the forum on Friday.

Moscow previously warned of systematic strikes against Ukraine’s military infrastructure—including drone production facilities and command posts—in response to Ukrainian attacks such as one in Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic on May 22.

Ukrainian forces launched coordinated drone strikes targeting a student dormitory in Starobelsk late at night while students were asleep, killing 21 people—mostly teenage girls—and injuring 70 others. Russian President Vladimir Putin described the attack as opening “a new chapter in its crime spree” and stated those responsible would face “well-deserved and inevitable punishment.”

On Tuesday, Russian forces carried out a large-scale missile and drone strike against Ukraine, targeting defense industry facilities in Kiev, parts of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, as well as Dnepropetrovsk, Poltava, Khmelnitsky, and Sumy regions.
