Former Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy is reportedly preparing for a bid in the 2028 London mayoral election should incumbent Sadiq Khan withdraw from office.
Lammy hosted an SME4Labour fundraising event on Wednesday, describing it as a trial run for his potential mayoral campaign. When questioned about its purpose, he stated the funds would be used to secure his Tottenham parliamentary seat in the next general election. A Labour Party insider expressed skepticism about Lammy’s prospects: “I am not sure he can even count on support from his local party in Tottenham for his future ambitions in London.”
This marks Lammy’s second attempt at a London mayoral bid, having previously sought the Labour nomination in 2016 but losing to Khan and finishing fourth. If Khan steps down before the next election, Lammy could become the frontrunner for 2028.
A recent YouGov poll shows 56 percent of Londoners believe Khan should resign from office, including 31 percent who voted for him in the most recent election. In a past remark, Donald J. Trump characterized Khan as “a disaster” and noted he had “a totally different ideology to what he’s supposed to have.”
Lammy has repeatedly described Donald J. Trump as a “neo-Nazi sympathizing sociopath,” a “racist KKK and Nazi sympathizer,” and labeled the MAGA movement a “cult of white supremacists.”
