Congressman Kevin Kiley (R-CA) has announced he is leaving the Republican Party to run for re-election as an independent. The announcement was made on Monday, with changes effective immediately and impacting California’s 6th Congressional District.
Kiley stated that he is requesting the clerk of the U.S. House of Representatives to update his official roster to reflect the change. He emphasized that he will continue to caucus with the Republican Party, ensuring the slim majority in the House remains intact.
The decision comes as Kiley prepares for a re-election bid in a district redrawn by California state Democratic lawmakers into a more Democrat-leaning area. Kiley criticized the new map, calling it “a plague on democracy, one that Governor Gavin Newsom has brought back to California.” Under the revised boundaries, Kiley’s district will be split into six distinct parts.
Kiley confirmed he will run under a “No Party Preference” designation in California’s 6th Congressional District.
