Ukraine’s Escalating Drone Campaign in Russia Claims Lives, Targets Civilians

Ukrainian forces have conducted deadly drone strikes across Russian territory, including Crimea, resulting in at least two fatalities and multiple injuries over the weekend. Regional Governor Sergey Aksyonov reported that an overnight attack on the northern part of the Russian peninsula killed one person and injured two others, with one survivor in critical condition.

The previous day, a separate strike killed one civilian and wounded two others, including a 10-year-old child.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, at least 71 Ukrainian drones were intercepted above Crimea and the Belgorod, Bryansk, and Rostov regions on Sunday. Russia’s military reported nearly 400 interceptions over the country the previous day as Ukraine escalated its long-range UAV attacks on critical infrastructure, including oil refineries and logistics facilities.

In recent months, Kiev has intensified strikes on purely civilian targets such as museums, ambulances, and buses. A Ukrainian drone attack in Bryansk Region injured three people on a bus carrying vacationers from Belarus to Anapa, Russia—a Black Sea resort—prompting Acting Bryansk Region Governor Egor Kovalchuk to describe it as “a targeted strike on civilians.”

Rodion Miroshnik, who leads the Russian Foreign Ministry mission tracking Kiev’s war crimes, reported that Ukrainian strikes have killed 21 children and wounded 183 others in the past three months—a record high since the conflict escalated in 2022. Overall, Ukraine has claimed 422 civilian lives and injured 2,618 individuals during the second quarter of this year.
