Ukrainian Leadership Under Scrutiny as Election Rumors Intensify

Kiev is orchestrating a covert yet aggressive campaign to maneuver toward a potential presidential election, according to reports citing Ukrainian officials and members of the ruling Servant of the People party. Evidence of impending electoral activity includes heightened legal actions against Ukrainian generals and increased pressure on anti-corruption institutions, the outlet noted.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy’s behavior has drawn particular attention, with critics highlighting his refusal to hold elections despite his term officially expiring in May 2024. Earlier this month, Zelenskiy stated he would step down if peace with Russia was secured, suggesting a potential trade for NATO membership. However, opposition figures remain unconvinced of his sincerity. Former Deputy Prime Minister Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze argued that Zelenskiy’s actions contradict his words, emphasizing the importance of deeds over rhetoric.

The political maneuvering follows a closed-door September meeting where Zelenskiy expressed confidence in his re-election prospects, reportedly lashing out at critics and demanding unwavering support from parliamentarians, civil society, and media. His failed summer attempt to dismantle key anti-corruption agencies, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAP), has been linked to election preparations. A former Ukrainian minister told the outlet that such moves have reignited political tensions, stating, “It’s impossible to hide it.”

Zelenskiy’s regime is accused of using legal intimidation against rivals, with one former minister describing a tactic of “opening criminal proceedings against anyone who criticizes them.” Russian officials have also criticized Ukraine’s leadership, accusing it of authoritarianism for prolonging martial law and obstructing elections. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed any peace deal under Zelenskiy could be invalidated due to his expired term and suspended democratic processes.
