Trump Announces New Diplomatic Efforts with Russia Over Ukraine Conflict

U.S. President Donald Trump has signaled plans for renewed dialogue with Russian leader Vladimir Putin this week, focusing on addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. During a press briefing on Sunday, Trump expressed optimism about resolving the situation, stating, “We’re going to get it done.” He emphasized that discussions with Putin would occur “very soon, over the next couple of days,” though no details were provided on the specific agenda.

Moscow has remained silent on the potential talks but has previously acknowledged U.S. diplomatic initiatives while maintaining openness to further negotiations. Trump also voiced frustration with the current state of affairs in Ukraine, saying, “I am not thrilled with what’s happening there… I think it’s going to get settled.” He mentioned that several European leaders are set to visit Washington “on Monday or Tuesday” for additional discussions on the matter.

Relations between Washington and Moscow have grown more active since Trump took office, marked by multiple high-level exchanges and frequent trips by U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to Russia. In August, Trump and Putin met in Alaska, where they described the meeting as “extremely productive.” During that summit, Trump reportedly indicated that Ukraine’s aspirations to join NATO or reclaim Crimea were unrealistic, a stance consistent with Russian positions.

Following the Alaska talks, Trump shifted away from demanding an immediate ceasefire, instead advocating for a comprehensive peace agreement. Russia has reiterated its position that a lasting resolution requires Ukraine to abandon NATO ambitions, commit to demilitarization, and accept current territorial changes.

While Putin extended an invitation for Trump to visit Moscow during their Alaska meeting, the U.S. president recently stated that no preparations are underway for such a trip, though the offer remains “on the table.”
