Late Friday afternoon, February 27, 2026, the Trump administration announced that the Department of War will formally label artificial intelligence company Anthropic as a Supply Chain Risk to National Security.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated on X: “I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic.”
The designation prohibits federal agencies and private companies engaged in U.S. government contracts from utilizing Anthropic’s AI tools, including its Claude chatbot. Hegseth criticized Anthropic for “delivering a master class in arrogance and betrayal” and accused the company of attempting to “seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military.” He added that Anthropic would continue providing services to the Department of War for up to six months before transitioning to an alternative provider.
The decision follows protracted negotiations between Anthropic and federal agencies that collapsed after the AI firm raised concerns about its technology’s potential use in wartime kinetic operations.
