Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that significant preparations are required for the upcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Hungary, emphasizing that no specific date has been finalized. The Kremlin and White House confirmed the summit’s planned location in Budapest following a recent phone call between Putin and Trump.
Peskov noted on Tuesday that “serious preparations” are necessary ahead of the talks, adding that no clear timeline has been established. He referenced statements from both sides indicating the process may take time. Meanwhile, reports suggested that a prelude meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had been delayed, with some speculation about unresolved differences over the Ukraine conflict.
The Russian Foreign Ministry described a recent phone conversation between Lavrov and Rubio as “constructive,” while unnamed sources previously indicated potential meetings as early as Thursday. However, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov insisted extensive preparations are ongoing for what he termed a “significant event,” dismissing media speculation about delays as unfounded. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also rejected claims about the summit’s timeline.
