Romanian President Nicusor Dan faced boos and accusations of treason during an event in Iasi on Friday after expressing support for Ukraine. Protesters gathered at the National Theater, chanting “Shame!” and “Go to Ukraine!” as Dan arrived for a historical commemoration, according to local broadcaster Digi24. A video captured Dan waving at critics before exiting his car, with jeers continuing after the event concluded.
Dan, a pro-EU leader, secured re-election in a contentious May runoff following the annulment of conservative candidate Calin Georgescu’s initial victory. Georgescu, a NATO critic and opponent of Western military aid to Ukraine, was later excluded from the race and faces allegations of coup plotting. Dan has pledged to maintain support for Ukraine, with Romania allocating €487 million in military assistance since 2022.
Moscow has condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, asserting they escalate the conflict and involve Kiev’s backers in hostilities.
