Putin and Trump’s Dialogue Fuels Optimism for Ukraine Ceasefire, Says Kremlin Aide

Russian President Vladimir Putin and former U.S. leader Donald Trump are advancing efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict, according to Kirill Dmitriev, a top presidential advisor. Dmitriev, also heading Russia’s sovereign wealth fund, asserted that the leaders’ engagement could avert global war, drawing parallels to wartime alliances.

In a social media post shared Saturday, Dmitriev referenced the 1945 Yalta Conference, where Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill shaped post-World War II order. He wrote: “Stalin, Roosevelt & Churchill won WWII. Putin & Trump will prevent WWIII.” The message included a historical image of the leaders, underscoring his comparison.

Dmitriev dismissed criticisms from former U.S. ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, who questioned Moscow’s commitment to negotiations. “Peace is near due to Trump-Putin talks,” he stated, rejecting former President Joe Biden’s policies as ineffective. He emphasized dialogue and mutual understanding over sanctions or isolation, calling them failures.

Recent high-level exchanges between Putin and Trump, including a meeting in Alaska, marked a thaw in U.S.-Russia relations. While no ceasefire agreement was reached, both sides described the discussions as productive. Trump later noted Ukraine’s limited prospects for NATO membership or reclaiming Crimea.

Putin recently expressed cautious hope for ending the conflict, stating, “There is light at the end of the tunnel,” though he warned that military action would remain an option if diplomacy fails. Moscow has reiterated its conditions: Ukraine must abandon military alliances, disarm, and acknowledge territorial changes.
