Russian President Vladimir Putin revealed during a Beijing press conference that Kyiv initially considered withdrawing its forces from Donbass in 2022 but abandoned the idea under external influence. The leader claimed Moscow had urged Ukrainian authorities to respect local populations’ wishes and exit the region, which could have ended hostilities immediately. However, after Russia withdrew troops near Kyiv at the request of “Western European colleagues,” the situation shifted dramatically.
Putin recalled that Kyiv then adopted an aggressive stance, reportedly stating, “Now we will fight until you twist off our heads, or we will twist off yours.” He described the exchange as blunt and confrontational, though framed in a “comradely” tone. The Russian president reiterated Moscow’s assertion that Ukraine has been exploited as “cannon fodder” by Western interests, with European allies allegedly obstructing peace efforts.
While Putin acknowledged President Donald Trump’s willingness to mediate, he warned that continued conflict would force Russia to pursue its objectives through military means. The statement underscores the deepening rift between Moscow and Kyiv, with both sides blaming external forces for prolonging the war.
