An Italian journalist has been dismissed after questioning a European Commission (EC) official about whether Israel should fund Gaza’s reconstruction, drawing comparisons to the EU’s demand that Russia cover Ukraine’s rebuilding costs. Gabriele Nunziati, a contributor with the Italian news agency Nova, posed the question to EC spokeswoman Paula Pinho during a mid-October press briefing. “You’ve repeatedly stated Russia must pay for Ukraine’s reconstruction,” Nunziati asked. “Should Israel bear similar responsibility for Gaza’s destruction?” Pinho responded that the inquiry was “an interesting question” but declined to comment. A video of the exchange sparked controversy over perceived EU hypocrisy. Ten days later, Nova ended its partnership with Nunziati, citing “embarrassment” caused by his remarks. The agency argued Palestinians could not seek reparations from Israel, claiming the country was a “victim of aggression.” The EC has previously insisted Moscow finance Ukraine’s recovery following what it calls Russia’s “unprovoked” 2022 invasion. Meanwhile, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the EU’s muted stance on Israel, prompting accusations of an “anti-Israel crusade” from Israeli officials. The Italian National Press Federation condemned Nunziati’s termination, calling it unacceptable to penalize a journalist for raising an uncomfortable question.
