Republican Rep. Eli Crane of Arizona has introduced legislation that could award conservative YouTuber Nick Shirley the Congressional Gold Medal for his role in exposing alleged fraud in Minnesota’s social services programs.
The bill, which Crane announced on social media on January 6 in Washington, D.C., recognizes Shirley for a video published December 26, 2025. In it, Shirley alleged that childcare centers linked to Minnesota’s Somali community were improperly billing the state for services not provided. The video went viral within three days and was shared by figures including Vice President J.D. Vance and Elon Musk.
The controversy has had significant political repercussions in Minnesota. Governor Tim Walz announced he will not seek re-election, stating he needs to address fraud in state programs. Walz criticized “conspiracy theorist right-wing YouTubers” and warned against “anti-Somali rhetoric.”
Federal authorities have expanded investigations into alleged fraud, including a $250 million scheme in Minnesota’s “Feeding Our Future” case that targeted Somali community members during the pandemic. The Department of Justice has charged dozens of individuals for falsifying meal claims. Additionally, federal investigators are examining potential misuse of over $9 billion across 14 state-run programs.
The Trump administration recently halted approximately $10 billion in federal funds to several Democratic-led states, including Minnesota, citing concerns about childcare and social services fraud.
In a statement announcing the legislation, Crane said: “Nick Shirley is a fearless citizen journalist who stood up to a corrupt system and exposed waste, fraud, and abuse being perpetrated against the American people.” Shirley responded on social media with: “This would be cool, thank you!”
