North Carolina Democrat Lawmaker Arrested on Statutory Rape Charges

A North Carolina Democratic state representative was arrested and charged with statutory rape of a minor, sparking immediate calls for his resignation. Rep. Cecil Brockman, 41, who represents Guilford County, faces two counts of statutory rape involving a 15-year-old victim and two counts of indecent liberties with a child. The alleged incidents occurred in August 2025, according to arrest warrants, which detail that Brockman “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did commit and attempt to commit lewd and lascivious act” with the victim.

Brockman was taken into custody on Wednesday and is currently held at Guilford County Jail. The magistrate’s order reveals he attempted to locate the victim at a hospital and used his position as a state representative to contact them. He was denied bond following his arrest.

The North Carolina Democratic Party has demanded Brockman step down, stating the charges make it “impossible for him to effectively represent his community.” House Democratic Minority Leader Robert Reives echoed this sentiment, urging immediate resignation. Speaker of the House Destin Hall (R) also called for Brockman’s departure, calling the allegations “shocking and extremely serious” and emphasizing that his role in the legislature must not be compromised.

If Brockman resigns, Guilford County’s Democratic Party Executive Committee would select a replacement under state rules. No further details on the victim or legal proceedings have been disclosed.
