Conservative Journalist Avoids Prosecution in ICE Facility Incident

A conservative journalist who was arrested during a demonstration at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Portland, Oregon, will not face charges for disorderly conduct. Nick Sortor, who was detained by Portland Police while covering the event, received confirmation on October 6, 2025, that the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office has declined to prosecute him.

The DA’s office stated that after reviewing reports and video evidence, they concluded “the crime of Disorderly Conduct cannot be proven against Mr. Sortor beyond a reasonable doubt.” Sortor, who is still required to appear in court, described the decision as “ONLY the beginning” of his legal battle. He attributed the dismissal to pressure from his demand for discovery regarding alleged coordination between Portland Police and Antifa during the incident.

Portland Police justified the arrest by citing probable cause based on information available at the scene. However, other journalists present claimed Sortor did not incite disorder, with violence primarily attributed to anti-ICE agitators. The ICE facility has faced sustained protests from groups linked to Antifa, while local officials have been accused of limiting support for federal authorities amid political tensions.
