Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty in federal court to the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with charges carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
In a Friday hearing, Mangione admitted he posed as an investor to gather intelligence at a UnitedHealthcare event in New York City. He cited years of severe back pain and difficulties navigating the insurance system as motivation for his actions. “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan,” he said, confirming that he understood his actions would place Thompson in fear of death or bodily injury and knew they were illegal.
The guilty plea—made less than a month before Mangione’s trial was scheduled to begin on September 8—eliminates the need for a federal trial and may expedite sentencing. It remains unclear how the state case against him will progress. During the hearing, Mangione stated: “I understand the charges filed against me and that I am waiving my right to a speedy trial and appeal.”
