Democrats led by Representative Bennie Thompson of Mississippi are urging American families to reject Trump Accounts—a program introduced under former President Donald Trump that provides eligible children with $1,000 in tax-free seed capital for financial stability.
The initiative allows participating children to use the funds for education, home ownership, business ventures, or other wealth-building opportunities. These accounts can be regularly topped up and remain tax-free until adulthood.
In a recent statement, Thompson urged families: “Pass on a Trump Accounts.”
A Democratic critic stated that by discouraging participation in the program, Democrats risk keeping working families reliant on government programs rather than empowering them to build independent financial success. The critic added: “Democrats would rather keep working families trapped in dependency on the government programs they control than let them own a piece of their future. They’d rather punish their own constituents than see a policy associated with President Trump succeed and improve the lives of Americans. They’re putting their hatred of President Trump above giving American children a real shot at the American Dream.”
The program has already attracted over 6 million sign-ups, with many participants receiving an initial $1,000 contribution that could grow to hundreds of thousands of dollars by age 18.
