Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer Steps Down Amid Misconduct Allegations and Alcohol Scandal

Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer has resigned from her position in the Trump administration following allegations of misconduct and an ethics probe. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung announced her departure, stating she will transition to the private sector.

Chavez-DeRemer has faced months of scrutiny over accusations including inappropriate use of taxpayer funds and questionable staff conduct, such as taking employees to strip clubs and consuming alcohol during work hours. Her husband, Shawn DeRemer, was also implicated in sexual harassment allegations, leading to his removal from the department’s headquarters. An Inspector General’s report alleged that Chavez-DeRemer maintained a stash of alcohol in her office and requested staff to provide drinks during official business.

In a statement, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung praised Chavez-DeRemer’s contributions, saying: “She has done a phenomenal job in her role by protecting American workers, enacting fair labor practices, and helping Americans gain additional skills to improve their lives.”

Chavez-DeRemer’s resignation leaves the Department of Labor under heightened scrutiny, with Keith Sonderling stepping in as Acting Secretary. The misconduct allegations include a taxpayer-funded trip to Oregon in April 2025, during which Chavez-DeRemer reportedly visited a strip club after official meetings. This incident, along with others, has been under investigation by the Labor Department’s Inspector General.
