On Monday, March 30, 2026, President Donald Trump issued an ultimatum to Iran, warning that the United States would “completely obliterate” the country’s energy and water infrastructure if a satisfactory deal regarding Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile program is not reached soon and if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
In his statement, Trump specifically targeted “Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!)” — infrastructure he claimed had been “purposefully not yet ‘touched.’” The president declared: “We will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched.’” He cited the threat as retaliation for “our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old Regime’s 47 year ‘Reign of Terror.’”
The administration reported that on Monday, up to 20 tankers were permitted to transit through the Strait of Hormuz following an agreement reached with Iran on Sunday ahead of President Trump’s April 6 deadline for the waterway to reopen. Despite a recent buildup in U.S. ground forces near the strait, officials indicated the administration remains committed to potentially scaling back military operations against Iran as negotiations progress.
