Netanyahu Declares Iran Regime Change Requires ‘Ground Component’

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on March 19 that “Iran is being decimated” as Israel and the United States target Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. However, he emphasized that achieving genuine regime change would require a “ground component.”

In remarks made during a press conference following President Donald J. Trump’s comments in the Oval Office earlier that day, Netanyahu warned against simplistic leadership replacements: “You don’t want to replace one ayatollah with another. You don’t want to replace Hitler with Hitler.”

Netanyahu stressed that while air campaigns can be effective, they are insufficient for regime change. “We can create the conditions,” he said, “but they have to exploit those conditions at a certain point.” He stated the Iranian people must ultimately drive the transition. The comments come amid recent Israeli strikes targeting Iran’s intelligence minister and broader operations against Tehran’s political, military, and intelligence infrastructure. Netanyahu also dismissed accusations of pressuring the United States into confronting Iran, asserting Trump was already aware of an Iranian nuclear threat: “He explained it to me, I didn’t explain it to him.”
