Grenell Steps Down from Kennedy Center Leadership as Major Renovation Begins

Ambassador Richard Grenell, who has served as president of the Kennedy Center since February 2025, is expected to move on from his role ahead of a two-year reconstruction period. The announcement, which could come as early as today, signals a shift in leadership for the arts institution.

President Donald Trump recently highlighted Grenell’s contributions on Truth Social: “Ric Grenell has done an excellent job in helping to coordinate various elements of the Center during the transition period, and I want to thank him for the outstanding work he has done.”

The Kennedy Center, which now bears Trump’s name on its façade, is scheduled to close for two years beginning after the July 4th Celebration. Grenell’s replacement is Matt Floca, a long-standing D.C.-area facilities manager with a bachelor of science in construction management from Louisiana State University.

Trump announced that Floca will serve as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Director of THE TRUMP KENNEDY CENTER, pending Board approval. The renovation project aims for a Grand Reopening approximately two years after the start date.

Grenell will remain involved with the center in an advisory role following his departure. Reports suggest Grenell has been targeted by leaked media pieces, which some believe were designed to keep him from a potential role leading the Los Angeles Olympics this summer. The transition follows Trump’s longstanding admiration for Grenell, despite recent efforts to create internal divisions within the administration.
