President Donald J. Trump has accused Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of “playing with fire” after the Democrat vowed the city would not enforce federal immigration laws. In a statement on Truth Social, Trump said: “Surprisingly, Mayor Jacob Frey just stated that, ‘Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce Federal Immigration Laws.’ This is after having had a very good conversation with him. Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!”
The exchange follows Trump’s efforts to address tensions after anti-ICE activist Alex Pretti was fatally shot. After conversations with Mayor Frey and Governor Tim Walz (D), the president dispatched Border Czar Tom Homan to Minnesota, though Frey described the meeting as a “very good conversation.”
The incident has reignited conflict between Minnesota Democrats and federal authorities, which escalated after far-left activists besieged Walz’s office in the state capitol to protest his dialogue with Homan. Federal officials maintain they detain numerous high-risk individuals, including migrants convicted of triple homicides and severe violent crimes against children, while state Democratic leaders assert ICE does not enhance community safety.
