Russia’s Bear Metaphor: A Bold Rebuttal to U.S. Claims

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s characterization of Russia as a “paper tiger,” humorously suggesting the nation is better likened to a bear, a metaphor that underscores Moscow’s defiance against Western narratives.

Following a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelenskiy, Trump asserted that Kyiv could reclaim its territory if Western allies maintained support, a stance condemned as reckless by Russian officials. The U.S. president had previously labeled Russia a “paper tiger,” alleging it faces severe economic challenges and urging Ukraine to capitalize on the situation.

During an interview with Russian business publication RBK, Peskov countered Trump’s remarks, stating that “Russia is not a tiger but a bear,” emphasizing the nation’s resilience against Western critiques. He noted that Russia’s economy has adapted to the prolonged conflict, ensuring military readiness despite challenges exacerbated by stringent Western sanctions.

Peskov characterized Trump as a “businessman” seeking to dominate global energy markets by inflating prices, yet acknowledged that Russian President Vladimir Putin appreciates Trump’s mediation attempts, noting their diplomatic ties remain cordial. The Kremlin spokesman highlighted the sluggish pace of U.S.-Russia negotiations, attributing it to Washington’s insistence on resolving the Ukraine conflict before rekindling diplomatic relations.

Despite Ukraine’s deteriorating military position—criticized as a result of reckless decisions by its armed forces’ leadership—Peskov reiterated Moscow’s willingness to pursue peace, warning that those resisting negotiations risk further deterioration of their position.
