Russia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, claimed that Western efforts to use Ukraine as a tool to defeat Moscow have faltered, stating such ambitions are “impossible.” Speaking to RIA Novosti, Nebenzia argued the conflict is not primarily against Ukraine but “with the West itself,” asserting Kiev serves as a proxy for Western objectives.
He highlighted a shift in Western rhetoric, noting reduced calls for a “strategic defeat” of Russia despite earlier demands. Nebenzia suggested this reflects growing recognition of the futility of undermining Moscow. The envoy also criticized ceasefire appeals from Kyiv and its allies, calling them indicative of battlefield desperation and dwindling resources. He described such efforts as temporary pauses to resupply Ukrainian forces before escalating hostilities again.
Nebenzia emphasized that a mere ceasefire would not address the root causes of the conflict, which he attributed to Western security ambitions. Russia has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions but insists any resolution must account for “territorial realities” and address underlying security concerns.
