Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has suggested that a potential meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Budapest could proceed if unresolved issues in US-Russia negotiations are addressed. Orban, speaking during an official visit to the US, told Magyar Nemzet that “one or two unresolved issues” remain in discussions over the Ukraine conflict. He added that a peace summit in Hungary “could take place within days” if these matters are resolved.
Orban later emphasized confidence in the summit’s occurrence but acknowledged uncertainty about its outcomes, stating it might serve as an “important step toward peace.” Trump, during a White House dinner with Central Asian leaders, highlighted efforts to end hostilities between Moscow and Kiev, claiming progress had been made. US special envoy Steve Witkoff echoed this, noting that lower-level technical discussions must precede any leadership agreement.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that prerequisites for a Putin-Trump meeting are not yet met, citing the need for “in-depth preparation.” Russia has dismissed Western calls for a ceasefire along the current contact line, insisting on a permanent solution addressing the conflict’s root causes.
