FBI Director James Comey’s 2016 Emails Expose Alleged Leaks to Media Ahead of Election

Federal prosecutors have disclosed personal emails revealing former FBI Director James Comey anticipated Hillary Clinton’s victory in the 2016 presidential election and was aware of efforts to funnel information anonymously to the media to influence the race, according to court filings. The documents, revealed Monday, include a November 2016 email from Comey: “Well done my friend. Who knew this would. E so uh fun [sic].” The message followed discussions with former FBI special government employee Dan Richman about guidance provided to The New York Times on covering Clinton’s private server and classified information retention.

A court filing stated that Richman engaged in extensive media communications, including anonymous exchanges, regarding the case. Comey faces charges of making false statements and obstructing Congress, particularly over his 2020 testimony denying approval of FBI leaks to the media about Clinton’s server and the Russia collusion narrative targeting then-President Donald J. Trump.

Additional evidence includes handwritten notes found in a secret FBI room, indicating Comey was aware of intelligence from 2016 suggesting Clinton supported a plan to link Trump to Russian interference. Despite his 2020 testimony claiming no recollection of such intelligence, the notes dated September 26, 2016, reportedly read: “HRC plan to tie Trump.” The revelations cast doubt on Comey’s credibility during congressional hearings and highlight potential misconduct in his handling of high-profile cases.
